Last week we shared that we have joined up with Better Futures Forum, our Founder Tanya Ruka has joined the team as Kaitiaki. This is a brilliant initiative by Founders Catherine Knight and Mike Joy. Catherine is an experienced policy professional at KHM Consulting and an environmental historian. She is the author of four award-winning books, including Beyond Manapouri: 50 years of environmental politics in New Zealand and New Zealand’s Rivers: An environmental history. She is a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Governance and Policy Studies, University of Victoria Wellington. Mike is a freshwater ecologist, widely respected for his courageous and sustained advocacy for the environment. He has received many awards in recognition of his contributions to the environment, including being a semi-finalist for the 2018 Kiwibank New Zealander of the year. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Governance and Policy Studies, University of Victoria, Wellington.
We really respect their work and years of dedication to the environment so we felt honoured to join the team working towards better futures.
"Better Futures Forum is comprised of people who don’t want to passively look on and hope that others will take up the mantle of leadership and make this change; its people want to connect, empower and influence to ensure it happens."
"Our mission is to create broad momentum for a transition towards a more resilient Aotearoa. We are focusing on five key areas where environment, people and economy intersect, but acknowledge that each of these areas interrelate and overlap. Therefore, joined-up thinking that integrates Mātauranga Māori and Te Tiriti will be critical to how we engage with these key areas."
This week the report of the Resource Management Review Panel, “New Directions for Resource Management” was released. Better Futures Forum responded in the press release below.

The Better Futures Forum welcomes the report of the Resource Management Review Panel, “New Directions for Resource Management”. The report offers the opportunity to address some of the key environmental issues facing Aotearoa New Zealand, which threaten the quality of life of both current and future generations. In particular, Better Futures supports a more future-focussed approach that would be aided by a Strategic Planning Act.
